Almanach is a project born out of the weird, indecipherable visions of ghosts, a slow lilting waltz towards the nexus of lived drudgery and wild, flourishing imagination. Elegant, wispy beats tripping through the crawl-spaces of inner-mind smash up against a virtual wall of searing, soaring guitar drone, wrapped up in longing, breathy vocals that scream, that whisper. It’s the sound of an epiphany waiting to hatch with explosive force but remains stuck just outside of the cortex, dancing on the edge of cerebellum as lost pieces of dream material. This sense of misplacement, of loss mirrors a fate that makes sense for the band: members Alex Wilson (Chronic Anxiety, Love Club, Mute Host, Royal DNA) and Lauren Leilani Iona (Cult Objects, Deep Tissue, Princess Rabbit) are punk rock lifers whose expansive work can’t be contained by mere experiments. Thus, Almanach’s recordings were almost lost to the ether, displaced as a studio project that threatened to never see the light of day. But it’s music that haunts like sonic apparitions meant to leap out of monitors and ear pods and into the stranger spaces, eschewing labels like “blackened shoegaze” or “soundtrack to a dusty western played by Gundam fighters”. This is, was a band that doesnt/didnt exist, ever, but the beauty of these songs deserve to be heard, to be immersed in, and dreamed about.
